TOs addressing overlap between SoCal Regionals 2017 and CEOtaku
At the endpoint of May, Level-Up Productions revealed details on the planning process for SoCal Regionals 2017. These updates confirm that a venue and schedule for the event have been locked in…but at a cost that the team had initially hoped to avoid.

The event is set to occur on the weekend of September 22-24 at the Anaheim Convention Center in California. However, this causes SoCal Regionals to overlap with a handful of other tournaments, particularly CEOtaku, one of the anime community’s most cherished events if not the most cherished.
Before reaching a decision, Level Up was absolutely aware of when CEOtaku would take place, so they tried valiantly to find a location and schedule that would not overlap with one another. Unfortunately, as time went on the team received rejection notices from a growing number of venues, causing their window of opportunity to decrease in size. Eventually, they had no choice but to bite the bullet and go with their original schedule.
“Our intention is never to segregate communities nor make planning any more difficult for organizers and their events,” Level Up states on their blog. “The Anime community is one of the most passionate scenes in the FGC and we have been hard at work ensuring visibility for Anime fighters at our local and online events, which include Weds Night Fights, Overdrive Series Online Tournaments, and Vanguard.”
That being said, Level Up has contacted the organizers behind CEOtaku as well as a handful of the anime community’s lead figures in order to reach a solution that will allow participants to enjoy both of their events, if possible. They also intend to implement feedback given to them by players who’d previously attended SoCal Regionals 2016, including bringing up one of the anime scene’s titles as a main game for the stage.
These two events will also occur simultaneously with EGX and the Tokyo Game Show, the former being a Premier Event for the Capcom Pro Tour 2017 season. However, due to different time zones, it will be easier for viewers to catch the broadcasts for all of them. Participation, however, will definitely be split across all of these high-quality events, a scenario that cannot be avoided but perhaps is for the best.
It’s also worth noting that we (StreamMe) have partnered with Level Up once again to host a second season for the beloved Overdrive Series, with Guilty Gear XRD Rev 2 as the battleground instead of its predecessor. Unlike in the first season, players will be competing for league points to earn a fully paid trip to CEOtaku 2017. For more details, please see this article.
Back to SoCal Regionals. The event will take place at the Anaheim Convention Center, located just across from Disneyland, one of the country’s greatest theme parks known to man. A collection of restaurants and nightlife locations will also be within walking distance of the venue. Should you happen to be in SoCal on Wednesday, September 20th, you can pay a visit to the Esports Arena, which is a twenty-minute drive from the ACC, to enjoy that week’s Wednesday Night Fights.
The event will utilize the ACC’s ballrooms to provide the adequate space for its players, though Level Up intends to step it up with top-grade exhibit halls eventually. For those looking for hotel accommodations, they have partnered with the Anaheim Marriott as the official #SCR2017 hotel. See below for details.
