According to a Tweet by a known freelance CS:GO reporter and insider known as DeKay, there may be some news headed to fans by way of Team Liquid. According to an unnamed source, “Zews will be announced as the new Team Liquid head coach as early as today, per source. Was a player favorite of all candidates who applied.”
A long-standing veteran of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Counter-Strike 1.6, Wilton “zews” Prado is no stranger to the role of team coach. He turned to coaching in 2015 with Games Academy before leaving for Luminosity Gaming in November. Zews continued to coach the roster when it was picked up by SK Gaming in July of 2016, leading the team to victory at DreamHack Austin 2016 and ESL One Cologne 2016; under his coaching the team also saw 3rd-4th placement at ESL One New York and EPICENTER 2016.
Should the report prove to be true, zews will be taking over the coaching position for Luis “Peacemaker” Tadeu, who announced in October that he would be parting ways as Team Liquid’s CS:GO coach. In a statement posted to TwitLonger, he stated that he was leaving because of a disagreement with “business principles.” Though Tadeu was only recently hired this past May, Team Liquid’s results during his tenure were of high marks for the year. Under Peacemaker, Team Liquid placed second at ESL One Cologne, and took third/fourth at ESL One: New York where they lost to Natus Vincere, two of the highest premier-level placings for the team in 2016.
Despite being a coach since August 2015 for various teams, zews claimed that playing was always where his heart would be. However, in a Twitlonger posted at the announcement of his departure after a 4-month stint with Immortals, the Brazilian pro said that his future would lie in coaching.
“I have decided to go back to coaching,” zews wrote, “It’s something I do extremely well and feel very motivated to fully embrace again. I know what I’m here to do now.”
