Release Date Announced for Tekken 7!
Ever since Tekken 7 made its competitive debut via the traditional arcade cabinet, a question has burned in the minds of all Tekken players: when would it be officially released on console?
Earlier today, Namco’s Tekken team took to their official Twitter to finally answer this question.
Tekken 7 will be released for the Playstation 4, Xbox One and Windows 10 platforms on June 2nd, 2017! Pre-orders are now being accepted online and in retail stores, and there are multiple benefits in placing one depending on the platform you choose, although one of them is universal. Should you pre-order right now, you will gain early access to Tekken 7 cast member Eliza!
If you opt to pre-order the Playstation 4 version, you’ll be able to acquire Legacy Costumes for King, Xiaoyu and Jin! The costumes have long since been a very creative feature since the early days of Tekken, as the possibilities on how to redecorate your favorite character are limitless!
On the other hand, pre-ordering the Xbox One version of Tekken 7 gives you one of the older installations in the series: Tekken 6, playable on the Xbox One due to the backwards compatibility for titles from the console’s predecessor, the Xbox 360! This allows you to enjoy the previous chapter of Tekken while indulging in the new one. And yes, online play is still up and running for Tekken 6!
Finally, you can pre-order the Tekken 7 Collector’s Edition which comes with multiple pieces of Tekken merchandise! These include the official soundtrack, action figures, a season pass and more to be announced by the Tekken team! Typically the Collector’s Edition will be priced for more than a standard copy of the game, but if you happen to be a collector AND a fan of Tekken, this is a dream opportunity. This benefit applies to all platforms for which Tekken 7 is available.
What is Tekken? It is a 3D fighting franchise whose roots date back to arcades from the mid 1990s. Unlike most of its sibling fighters which were 2D, Tekken took on a new approach to gameplay with the ability to move around the arena in all directions. The name Tekken is inspired by a translation of Japanese characters for “Iron Fist,” which in turn inspired the storyline for a tournament called The King of Iron Fist, hosted by a company called the Mishima Zaibatsu. The series features an expanding cast of characters with multiple storylines, but the Tekken universe revolves around the tale of the Mishima clan. The series launched via arcades in 1994 with its first installation eventually coming to the Playstation a year later, and the rest of the series would eventually follow suit.
The second title in the Tekken series and its sequel were considered breakthrough titles in the classic fighting game scene. They would be revered as some of the greatest games of all time, and to this day, Tekken continues to evolve into a monster of a franchise. Its previous installation is Tekken Tag Tournament 2, released in September 20, 2012 for the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, meaning that it has been almost five years since a new Tekken came to consoles.
A little piece of gold to mention: Tekken 7 will hit the fighting game community a month before EVO 2017 is set to occur. This raises our hopes about its inclusion in the EVO roster, which will be revealed tomorrow night (read here for more details)!
Are you ready for the next battle?! Pre-order Tekken 7 now and we’ll see you on the arena in June! And who knows? Stream.Me may have surprises in store for the Tekken community… *wink, wink*
