Interviews with @Thompxsonn & @TheLCD3

“All life must compete in order to flourish.”

The above is quoted by Master Uthar, a character from a legendary Xbox title called Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (I highly recommend that game). He meant it as a description for the life of a Sith warrior, but for the fighting game community, that quote is just as true.

Motivations for players who invest so much of themselves into fighting games can stretch from casual fun to testing their ability to win under pressure. Some players mind their own business whereas others just have this drive to defeat a specific player whose image has been burned into the front of their minds. This usually happens due to tournament records between two specific players, but not always.

Whenever players who aren’t on the best of speaking terms are forced to face each other with pride – and sometimes money – on the line, it intensifies the vibe from their match. Such stakes can sometimes cause a dramatic shift in how these two players control their characters while fans watch with bated breath as they wait to see whose point will hold true. Regardless of the outcome, one player is walking away with his head held down while he suffers a huge decrease in prestige. Such is the nature of defeat.

But defeat never has to be eternal. For some, it marks a new beginning, a renewed determination to overcome their obstacles. And that can lead to runbacks where the outcome could be very different…

With the Killer Instinct World Cup just two weeks away, the KI community’s eyes are all on two players who’ve got a score to settle with each other: CrazyLCD and BH Thompxson. Since the beginning of Season 3, Thompxson has established a consistent winning record against LCD in a tournament setting. Outside of that, however, win counts between the two are always neck-and-neck.

In spite of Thompxson’s consistency, LCD holds a firm belief in his ability to expose him as “fraudulent.” In fact, he took to Twitter weeks ago with a call-out to his rival in video form. Check it out!

After watching that clip, your first question will naturally be, “What does the other player think about this?” Well, grab some popcorn (and some doggy treats while you’re at it) because Thompxson’s got those shots locked and loaded!

These callouts are driving the KI community wild! How will the resulting flames be quenched? This is the fighting game community, so you ought to expect what’s coming next…a high-stakes money match to be played at the KI World Cup, with $500 on the line from both players as confirmed in LCD’s post below! Since the post was liked by Thompson, it is confirmed that they both have agreed to this wager.

In an attempt to capture the hype surrounding this rivalry, I took some time out of my schedule to interview both players. As you read on, you’ll learn their thoughts about one another, as well as how they’re preparing for the KI World Cup and their overall consensus on the game’s current state.

Enjoy!

JagoBlake: First of all, the Stream.Me community would like to know…who are you?

CrazyLCD: Hello everyone, my name is Larry also known as LCD and I’m 25 years old.

JagoBlake: What inspired your gamer tag?

CrazyLCD: I’ve always thought my real life initials were really cool sounding so I’ve always based myself as just that. I’ve been using variations of LCD as my alias for over 13 years such as GamerLCD or CrazyLCD. You can imagine how impossible it is to get just LCD on a platform without it being taken.

JagoBlake: What attracted you to Killer Instinct as your game of choice? And what inspired you to play it competitively?

CrazyLCD: Fortunately I grew up in a small home where my dad played video games and he got me into them; our games choice were Tetris Attack and Killer Instinct. I was very young obviously probably 7 or 8 but I distinctly remember hearing Combo Breaker!!! This is the only game I would play for hours on end year after year. When the 2013 version was announced I almost cried and knew right away I had to play it for pure nostalgia purposes alone.

JagoBlake: You command a legion of characters but seem to have a preference for Orchid. Why is that?

CrazyLCD: Forever since I can remember in any video game not just fighting games, I’ve always preferred female characters, and not for the reasons you might expect. Just something about playing an old guy just doesn’t seem as appealing to me, fighting as a badass woman is so much cooler. Well and obviously look prettier as well 😏

JagoBlake: You were a participant at the first Killer Instinct World Cup a year ago. Would you like to describe your experience there?

CrazyLCD: Coming off of a top 4 placing at EVO 2015, I felt I had accomplished everything I wanted to in KI Season 2. I didn’t really expect much going into KI Cup so it was mostly just to hang out with everyone and have fun. For a inaugural event it was pretty nice.

JagoBlake: What inspired this recent rivalry between you and BH Thompson?

CrazyLCD: Thompson and I have always been friends but also rivals. All through Season 2 I felt I was one of the best players and now it seems Thompson is one of the best players in Season 3, a season in which I feel benefits certain playstyles and characters more than others a prime example being Jago. Some might say (well, mostly me) that Jago may or may not be helping Thompson just a little bit too much. 🙂

JagoBlake: You both have agreed to face each other in a live exhibition at the Killer Instinct World Cup. How confident are you about defeating your opponent? What points are you looking to make to the community and/or to yourself? And should you succeed, how will you feel?

CrazyLCD: Going into this money match I feel beyond confident. While it may be true that Thompson has defeated me in previous offline bouts, those were best of 5. I feel playing a first to 10 eliminates those one off occurrences of randomness and really allows players to shine in a long set instead being random’ed out. While I may be the underdog going into this, I’m here to prove that I am the better overall player and don’t need top tier garbage to win. Losing hasn’t even crossed my mind.

JagoBlake: In your call-out to Thompson, you expressed the desire to beat him with Orchid rather than with any other character. Why?

CrazyLCD: Orchid is a relatively strong character in Season 3 however she still seems to fall short on tier lists ranking below top10. In my opinion she goes even against Jago, but Orchid has to heavily outplay him because of his ability to regenerate a lot of life. Beating Thompson with Orchid just solidifies my ability to play neutral, play footsies, and anti air instead of relying on another “cheap” character whom the community doesn’t feel highly of like Gargos. One mistake and Jago goes crazy with health.

JagoBlake: The entire KI scene seems to be very excited for  your exhibition with Thompson. Why do you think that is?

CrazyLCD: Despite what people say in public, drama and beef brings excitement to people; they love to watch two players go at it and get salty. Knowing something like money is on the line also makes things better for the viewers. While I am doing this MM to prove a point, I also love bringing excitement when I can to the KI community, even if it means taking a little heat for it. Think of it as WWE wrestling, someone has to play the heel and someone has to play the face. I’ve been cutting promos left and right haha.

JagoBlake: What are you doing to prepare for the World Cup?

CrazyLCD: Honestly I’m the type of player who loves to play cold, going in over prepared and overthinking every little step I feel makes myself play worse overall honestly. While I do practice offline/online I try to keep it to a minimum. Living in the moment and adjusting on the fly is what I do best.

JagoBlake: Do you foresee yourself continuing your competitive career with Killer Instinct after the World Cup?

CrazyLCD: The answer to this question is a weird one because yes…and no. I’ve always been a huge supporter for Killer Instinct and I probably always will be however at the same time many know that I have expressed my dislike for the current games balance and overall direction. Playing for 3+ years basically non-stop has left me getting bored. I need some things to excite me again like Costumes or new training mode/features. Wasn’t a fan of Kilgore and it looks like this next character won’t appeal to me either. Only time will tell if I will continue to play competitively or not.

JagoBlake: Of the extra three characters coming to Killer Instinct, only one of them has been revealed and playable for a time. Who are you hoping to see added to the lineup?

CrazyLCD: Basically everyone knows that I’ve been advocating for Joanna Dark for while now and she just so happened to be voted the most wanted new character in the survey MS did last year. Like I mentioned earlier I’m a huge fan of female characters so if they peek my interest I’ll give them a shot. Cosmetics and appearance and very important to me when it comes to characters, If they don’t look cool it’s a huge turnoff.

JagoBlake: How would you feel if Killer Instinct were to receive a Season 4? And if it does happen, what changes should be introduced to the game?

CrazyLCD: With every new seasons comes the risk of new mechanics, balance changes, bugs and loss of players. I feel a Season 4 would hurt more than help anything at this point and would rather just see a full blown sequel. This version of KI has had a great run but I think as with anything, eventually you need to move to bigger and better things. If nothing is being planned past Season3 I’d say just continue to update the game with DLC characters and Costumes.

JagoBlake: Based on who all has qualified for this year’s World Cup, do you believe you are more than ready for the competition?

CrazyLCD: Like last year I think I’m probably just going to be focused on having fun more than winning to doing well. At this point I’m just going to destroy Thompson and that will be good enough for me.

JagoBlake: Thank you for taking your time to talk with us! Any shout-outs you would like to give?

CrazyLCD: My only shout outs go to Microsoft and Iron Galaxy. No matter how much I complain, beg for buffs, troll in the forums, I personally thank you guys from the bottom of my heart for making Killer Instinct what it is today and bringing my childhood memories back to life. If for whatever reason I do happen to win the world cup, my first initiatve as Champion is to get the original unaltered KI2 retro in game for all!

Thank you.

JagoBlake: First of all, the Stream.Me community would like to know…who are you?

BH Thompxson: My name is Deion “Thompxson” and I’m also known as your best Jago player in the KI community. Just an average carefree light skin dude that enjoys music, art, and gaming. I’m 21 years old from Nashville TN and still reside here. I like beautiful ladies, so if that applies to you hit up this sexy mf. 😉 (I’m not kidding)

JagoBlake: What inspired your gamer tag?

BH Thompxson: In school I was always called by my last name by my teachers. It stuck with me and I eventually started including my last name for anything I had to register a username. For my gamertag I wanted to be somehow generic and original, so since I had gotten into Kingdom Hearts at the time, I thought I’d base it off of that. Members of Orginization XIII had an “x” somewhere in their name, so I thought why not? “THOMPXSON“. It looked cool, so I went with it.

JagoBlake: What attracted you to Killer Instinct as your game of choice? And what inspired you to play it competitively?

BH Thompxson: Killer Instinct has been a childhood memory for me. I played KI1 a lot as a kid and played everyday when I got home from Elementary school. One day I grew out of it and started playing other games. Then we had the year 2013, where they announced Killer Instinct was releasing for Xbox One. Entirely revamped, new graphics.. Who wouldn’t be hype about playing KI after playing it a lot and having to wait for like 15 – 20 years for a new version of it.. One of my closest friends, you all know her by now. Pink Diamond had inspired me to play competitively asking me if I can put my casual playing ranked skills to the test, which were the online and offline tournaments. It was around the time Grimmmz, the best Jago player at the time had left, so I had to rise to the occasion wanting to prove that I can be the best Jago player ever. And the only way I could get acknowledged of that was to win these tournaments.

JagoBlake: You are known to be the best Jago player in the competitive community. Tell us, how does it make you feel to have such a reputation?

BH Thompxson: Well, to be known as the best Jago can be a little overwhelming at times. But I love being loved by fans. I’m ALWAYS willing to answer questions in regards to Jago knowledge, Matchup questions and opinions. It’s what I’ve wanted coming from being a hard headed Gate Keeper Ranked casual player in season 1. I’ve learned everything on my own and went through trial and error.

JagoBlake: What drove you to focus on Jago as your character of choice throughout your competitive life?

BH Thompxson: I was just a lazy ass to learn any other character out of Dojo.

JagoBlake: You were a participant at the first Killer Instinct World Cup a year ago. Would you like to describe your experience there?

BH Thompxson: My experience at the KIWC wasn’t as what I expected. Tbh I still wasn’t ready. I was still coming up as a player and trying to better myself in general. I had no monitor to practice on at home, or at the venue, and cause of it I lost to Sickle 3 – 0 , first round in winners. Someone I usually beat all the time in casual sets. A huge discouragement losing already. I still hadn’t lost focus though. I placed 13th there losing to MyGod 3 – 1 in losers, who had placed 2nd at the event. Wasn’t no shame losing to him. Wulf was a bad mu and I had never played the guy before. Hopefully I do better at the 2nd KIWC.

JagoBlake: What inspired this recent rivalry between you and CrazyLCD?

BH Thompxson: I had nothing against LCD. The guy came at me cause he always lost to me in tournaments, sets and that I’ve been winning everything over him… *pinches eyebrows* lol so whatever. He wants to embarrass me.. which isn’t going to happen. LCD is very funny. That’s why I still like him.

JagoBlake: You both have agreed to face each other in a live exhibition at the Killer Instinct World Cup. How confident are you about defeating your opponent? What points are you looking to make to the community and/or to yourself? And should you succeed, how will you feel?

BH Thompxson: I’m 99% confident defeating my opponent honestly. If I’m 100% focused into the game against a solid grounded character. Most likely I’ll win. I’m too skilled in the ground game and spacing for LCD. I think I’m at a point to where I might have ascended as one of the KI gods now and my opponent is still on earth being a corny mortal. I really have nothing to prove if I beat LCD. If he beats me somehow. He’d have to be extremely lucky and everyone gets one. Whatever. I still have wins under my belt for tournaments. WHERE’S YOURS LARRY?

JagoBlake: The entire KI scene seems to be very excited for  your exhibition with LCD. Why do you think that is?

BH Thompxson: Because we’re both lightskins. One’s a top dog, one’s an under dog. Brother character, Sister Character. Both corny. We’ve been talking shit to each other a lot recently. It’s probably the most interesting thing that’s happened in the KI community. And I’ve been looking unstoppable as well, beating my boys Nicky and Bass in tournaments which are the other 2 gods in tournaments. And then LCD…. the guy that hasn’t won anything at all this season. Overly thinking he’s confident beating me in a ft10, 500$ money match. I think that’s why people think it’s interesting. And plus it’s LCD. lol

JagoBlake: What are you doing to prepare for the World Cup?

BH Thompxson: Prack. Tis. Sing??

JagoBlake: Do you foresee yourself continuing your competitive career with Killer Instinct after the World Cup?

BH Thompxson: Yes. But I will start to slow down and start training my fellow Jago players to rise and one to become the next best Jago. It’s time for me to move on and begin my growth as a fighting game player and be known to the whole world rather than just KI.

JagoBlake: Of the extra three characters coming to Killer Instinct, only one of them has been revealed and playable for a time. Who are you hoping to see added to the lineup?

BH Thompxson: Tbh. Idk. I’ve seen some mentionings of a Kitana recently. So an actual ninja? Idk. I’m expecting another crazy character that’s going to be difficult to deal with and makes no sense knowing how characters have been turning out recently. My favorite character has been Raam so far. The character is very solid.

JagoBlake: How would you feel if Killer Instinct were to receive a Season 4? And if it does happen, what changes should be introduced to the game?

BH Thompxson: If KI recieves a season 4, It better be just improvements, solidifying, and bug fixes to the game. I would like new stages too. Practice mode needs some improvement. There needs to be a option where you can record the dummy to do something on wakeup, so you can recreate situations that are hard to deal with and come up with setups for characters. The frame data is wrong as well so needs to be updated.

JagoBlake: Based on who all has qualified for this year’s World Cup, do you believe you are more than ready for the competition?

BH Thompxson: As of right now? Almost ready for the competition. I still need to train my Jago to a point where I can deal with all the nonsense some of these newer character have. I only want to lose for pushing the wrong button at the wrong time. A better comparison would be my LVL in a basic RPG of being LVL 90 right now. I want to be a LVL 99.

JagoBlake: Thank you for taking your time to talk with us! Any shout-outs you would like to give?

BH Thompxson: Shout outs to all my family, friends and fans. My Jago brethren. cP Flipz being my first pupil. BH SamanoXsk8 for recently becoming sponsored with us. My team and sponsor Jmart, along with Amenty, Waterhorses, Truth, and also my Guilty Gear teammate KimJongPhil. My father who has recently joined the FGC community as well, Memphiz10c.

Again, thanks to both of these talented competitors for taking the time to speak with me! Make sure you guys tune in to the World Cup on March 10-12 to see these guys settle the score! If you’re unsure on what the World Cup is, read this post.
