FGC launches fund raiser to assist victims of Hurricane Irma

Near the end of August, Hurricane Harvey devastated Texas and Louisiana, bringing over forty inches of rain and extremely destructive wind speeds reaching up to 130 miles per hour. The aftermath has left Houston, among numerous other cities, submerged underwater.

Relief efforts have been launched to assist the damaged areas with recovery, but elsewhere in the Atlantic Ocean, another monstrous hurricane, called Hurricane Irma, has strengthened into a Category 5. It has already impacted the Carribbean Islands, with Barbuda and Saint Maarten among the locations that were affected the worst, and it is expected to make landfall in Florida this weekend. The storm is expected to weaken by the time its reach extends to as far as Miami, but nobody is taking chances…and rightfully so.

In response to the chaos wrought by Irma, a top-level Ken player from the Street Fighter V scene, known by the handle of Chris Tatarian, took to Twitter to make a proposal to the FGC. With two of the community’s biggest locals running their course tonight – Next Level Battle Circuit and Wednesday Night Fights, to be precise – he decided that now would be a good time to launch a fund-raising effort for the victims of Irma while Internet traffic was at an all-time high.

The responses have been swift and enormously positive. Even the big dogs of the FGC, including Alex Valle and Arturo “TS Sabin” Sanchez, jumped in to provide their input.

Initially, the community planned to host the fundraiser via GoFundMe, but Chris found that all funds raised via the site would be delivered on a monthly basis. This obviously did not align with the community’s interests in supporting the victims of Irma, so Chris sought another solution. Eventually he settled on starting the fundraiser at a website called Tiltify, com, and it is now open for receiving donations from not just the FGC, but all of the Internet population.

If you’d like to contribute to the relief effort for Irma, you can do so by going here. Bear in mind that donations must include at least $20 to be submitted. All contributions can be made by using your credit card or your Paypal account. The fund raiser will last for a whole week, starting tonight and ending on September 13th.

The goal for this fund raiser is $10,000.

Since the opening of the fund, the community has been quick to share it with their fellow gamers. It is also expected to be mentioned in the broadcasts for tonight’s locals as well as all offline events held for Red Bull Proving Grounds this weekend. To all our readers, if you can do so, we encourage you to take action in order to lessen the damage wrought by Irma.

We at StreamMe offer our deepest condolences to those affected by Harvey and Irma. We’d also like to give Chris Tatarian a nod of approval for taking the initiative in organizing this fund raiser.
